Your friend just got a job you’ve never heard of. “AI person,” they say. You smile, but you’re thinking: “What’s that?”

Your cousin lost her job last week. Same job she’s had for ten years. “Robot does it now,” her boss said.

If this sounds scary, you’re right to worry. By 2030, the World Economic Forum says 92 million jobs will disappear. But 170 million new ones will appear.

The problem? Most of us need completely new future work skills to get these new jobs. We’re talking about jobs that don’t even exist yet.

Why Work is Changing So Fast

Three big things are changing work:

Climate change is creating new jobs. People who fix wind turbines and install solar panels are getting loads of work. These jobs pay well and you don’t need a university degree.

More old people need care. Nurses and health workers are needed everywhere because people are living longer.

The truth is simple: future work skills aren’t nice to have anymore. You need them to survive.

One expert said: “Change will happen faster and faster.” It’s not slowing down.

The Future Work Skills You Actually Need

Let’s talk about what really matters.

Learn About AI

You don’t need to be a computer expert. But you need to understand how AI works in your job.

Remember when everyone was scared of the internet? AI is the same. People who learn it early will do much better.

Doctors use AI to find diseases. Marketing people use it to write ads. Teachers use it to make lessons. The trick is knowing what AI can do and working with it.

This might be the most important future work skills right now. Start using ChatGPT or other AI tools. Play around. See what they can do.

Think Things Through Properly

Most companies want people who can think clearly about problems. Not just guess, but really work things out.

This means asking “what proof do I have?” instead of “what feels right?” It means breaking big problems into small pieces.

Next time you have a problem, try this: write down what you know for sure, what you don’t know, and what you need to find out.

Handle Change Well

The last few years taught us that everything can change quickly. The people who did well weren’t the smartest – they were the ones who could change fast.

Being good at handling change is really useful. It means having backup plans and learning from mistakes instead of getting upset about them.

Start small. Try something that scares you a bit. When things go wrong, ask “what can I learn?” instead of “why me?”

Come Up with New Ideas

As robots do routine work, being creative becomes really valuable. Machines can follow instructions, but they can’t have crazy new ideas.

One company had no money for staff parties. So they asked everyone to suggest free ideas. Result? Loads of great ideas that cost nothing.

Being creative isn’t about art. It’s about looking at problems differently. Try this: when you’re stuck, think of ten different solutions. The first few will be obvious, but around number seven, you’ll get creative.

Lead People

Leadership isn’t about being the boss. It’s about getting people to follow you even when they don’t have to.

With teams working from different places, getting people to work together is really valuable. This is one future work skills that will always need humans.

You can practice anywhere. Organise something at work. Help a colleague. Be the person who makes others better at their jobs.

Keep Learning

This might be the most important: never stop learning new things.

What you know today might be useless in five years. The people who do well won’t be the ones who know most now – they’ll be the ones who keep learning.

Spend 15 minutes a day learning something new. Read about a different industry. Ask someone what they do. Stay curious.

Your Future Self is Watching
